Orderly Taxonomy Definitions

Orderly's Type 2 Profiles contain proprietary taxonomies designed to help you find the population of entities most relevant to you. Below we define Entity Type and Service Type taxonomies we use to group entities more intuitively.

Entity Type

Entity Type is Orderly’s highest roll up of Type 2 entities and offers information about what “kind” of entity it is within the broader ecosystem of NPI-assigned organizations.

Available Values and Definitions:

  • Facility: A brick-and-mortar location where care is provided, that is not individually owned and operated by a single practitioner.
    • E.g. Hospitals, Ambulatory Care Clinics
  • Group Practice: A group of associated care providers working as partners, but not necessarily tied to a brick-and-mortar location
  • Health System: At least one hospital and at least one group of physicians that provides comprehensive care (including primary and specialty care) who are connected with each other and with the hospital through common ownership or joint management.
    • E.g. UCHealth, Mayo Clinic
  • Hospital Unit: A unit within a hospital that is usually associated with a specific care category. Exists as an "entity type" because they can receive their own NPI numbers that are separate from their parent hospital.
    • E.g. Psychiatric Units, Rehabilitation Units, Epilepsy Units
  • Managed Care Organization: A "health plan" or healthcare company comprising a network of facilities and practices. Differs from a health system in that it offers managed health plans by contracting with insurers, and finances and delivers healthcare using a specific provider network.
    • E.g. Anthem, United, Kaiser Permanente
  • Solo/Private Practice* : A practice that is owned and operated by an individual care provider
*This field is currently under development.
  • Transportation: Mobile units where healthcare services are provided
    • E.g. Ambulances
  • Other: Organizations that exist within the healthcare ecosystem and are allocated NPIs, but don't fit into any of the above groupings. This group tends to include suppliers and agencies, which can be searched on using Orderly Health's Service Type taxonomy (see below).

Service Type

Service Type is a mid-level rollup of Type 2 entities, offering information about the kind of care or service offered by that entity. This taxonomy is most applicable to entities where Entity Type = Facility or Other.

Available Values:

  • Agencies: Organizations that provide healthcare outside of a traditional hospital or doctor's office setting.
    • E.g. Home Health Agencies who manage and deploy care providers to offer in-home assistance
  • Ambulatory Health Care Facilities: A brick-and-mortar location where patients receive care that is not a hospital.
    • E.g. dentist office, urgent care clinic, dialysis center, etc
  • Hospitals: Licensed institutions providing diagnostic and therapeutic services around the clock via an organized staff of physicians and nurses.
  • Hospital Units: A unit within a hospital that is usually associated with a specific care category. Exists as a "service type" because they can receive their own NPI numbers that are separate from their parent hospital.
    • E.g. Psychiatric Units, Rehabilitation Units, Epilepsy Units
  • Laboratories: Facilities where tests are conducted on clinical specimens. Generally not a place where patients receive care directly.
  • Nursing & Custodial Care Facilities: Organizations where patients who cannot live independently are attended around the clock by care providers.
    • E.g. Hospices, Memory Centers, Assisted Living Facilities
  • Residential Treatment Facilities: Live-in healthcare facilities typically providing treatment for substance abuse disorders, mental illness, or other behavioral problems.
  • Respite Care Facilities: Facilities providing short-term relief for primary caregives of patients with disabilities, mental illness, etc.
  • Suppliers: Includes pharmacies, blood and organ banks, suppliers of durable medical equipment like hearing aids or prosthetics, etc.
  • Transportation Services: Mobile units where healthcare is provided
    • E.g. Ambulances of various types (land, air, sea...)
  • Other Service Providers: A catchall for any NPIs that didn't fit into one of the above taxonomies.
